Week 2: Overview of Social Media Use

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Blogger, Snapchat, Tinder! The list goes on and on. Today, it seems we have so many social media platforms. We use social media for almost every aspect of out life from making friends to dating to having a business.

The social media platforms that I think are geared towards personal use include Facebook, Snapchat, Tinder, and Pinterest. While a few of these do offer support for businesses (Facebook and Pinterest), it seems that people have not caught on to using those features predominately. I think women in particular frequent Facebook and Pinterest because there are a lot of features that engage us including the Marketplace and Group (features in Facebook). I also think that Snapchat and Tinder are more for personal use because they really do not have any features that would support a business such as cash exchange, chat, and/or list of stock. People seem to be using these two social media platforms for dating and meeting new people.

There are social media platforms that work for businesses such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr/Blogger. These social media platforms are mostly used for promotion of products and services. Many celebrities and other paid sponsors are being featured by businesses within these social media platforms to promote certain products. For example Kim and Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are all sponsors of "Skinny Detox Tea". Most of their social media is of their advertisements. Many people follow celebrities, models, actors, and even sports champions to see what products that they use, what clothing they are wearing, and what things they should buy. These platforms are also easier for businesses to get in contact with potential clients, network with other people in similar industries, advertise your services and products, and even gain reviews from customers. Tumblr and Blogger in particular can be used to let customers know more about you, your business, and gain a relationship so they will buy more services/products rather than just advertising.

I think there are a few social media platforms that work for both business and personal use. Some of these social media platforms are stronger suited for one or the other but does have either business or personal features. Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr/Blogger can be used for personal use but in my opinion are better suited for business use. Facebook and Pinterest can also be used for business use but to me they are more for personal use. Each social media platform has its strengths and weaknesses but it is how you use them that can make a difference.

  1. I'm curious why you think Tumblr is better for business use? I haven't had any experience with a client of mine identifying with Tumblr. I always figured it was something that was an emotional void and doesn't really allow structured promotion.

  3. I think Facebook has shifted to becoming more business focused. Business can advertise to the demographics of their potential customers through targeted marketing. I notice more and more, advertisements in my feed which seem to be targeted at my likes, city I live in and age.

  4. I agree with you, the ones I use the most are Facebook and Pinterest, now just personal. I'm planning on using Facebook for the small business I'm setting up.

  5. I agree with you on your statement about people using Facebook more for personal use than business. I to think it's because they don't recognize the benefits or how to properly monetize their marketing efforts.

  6. Your blog is easy to read. As I am starting to get familiar with social media and working in inside sales, I will be trying to use Facebook for our company.
